Transport is New Zealand’s second-largest source of greenhouse gas emissions, of which the movement of freight equates to approximately one quarter. The Government, via the Emissions Reductions Plan (May 2022), has a target to reduce emissions from freight transport by 35% by 2035.

Following the launch of the SBC Low Carbon Freight Pathway, which demonstrates a roadmap on how we can decarbonise the freight sector, SBC has developed three implementation workstreams aiming to:

• build a mechanism to support the delivery and uptake of low emission freight
• enable businesses to understand and build business cases to invest in freight decarbonisation
• remove barriers to mode shift and increase the ability to move more freight by coastal shipping and rail.
